Post-planting Care for Seeded Areas

After seedlings reach 2" or so, they may benefit from a fertilizer application. Apply about 1/2 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. (if applying 10-10-10, use 5 pounds per 1,000 sq. ft.). Water thoroughly after fertilizing.

Begin mowing as turf grows using the 1/3 rule. Never cut off more than 1/3 of a grass plant.

Limit heavy traffic during the first growing season. Tender grass seedlings are subject to damage with traffic and irrigated soils are easily compacted.

There is only one pre-emergent weed control that can safely be applied to control grassy-type weeds at the time of planting. This product is called Tupersan (also known by the common name Siduron).

Post-emergent broadleaf herbicides should not be made to new turf until after having been mowed at least 3 times.
